METHODS & PROCESSES
Legacy Innovation Group has developed a very powerful suite of growth and innovation tools which we use as enablers of our work with our clients. These include the GR5 Growth Strategy Roadmap™, the Responsive Innovation Engine Architecture™, the Market Stream Innovation Management System™, the Emergent NPD Process™, the Breakthrough Business Innovation Model™, the Flight Board Innovation Method™, the Experiential Workplace Framework™, and the Dynamics of Innovation Design Guide™.
These tools were designed to be complimentary to one another. Used together, they enable a broad environment for growth and innovation. For example, our tools for defining and delivering new value — the Flight Board Innovation Method, the Breakthrough Business Innovation Model, and the Emergent NPD Process — can all be used within the broader Corporate Innovation environment defined by the Responsive Innovation Engine Architecture, which is itself further facilitated by the Market Stream Innovation Management System. Likewise, this Corporate Innovation environment is optimally nurtured when it is set inside an innovation culture established through the Experiential Workplace Framework and optimally facilitated when given workspaces designed according to the Dynannova Design Guide. Finally, all of these are most effectively leveraged when part of a well–defined innovation–driven growth strategy, as reflected in the GR5 Growth Strategy Roadmap. Used together, this suite of tools provides a comprehensive operational system that addresses every aspect of innovation–driven growth.
At the same time, we realize that the model of growth and innovation that best fits any one organization will be some customized adaptation of these. Thus, we never approach these frameworks as overly rigid, but rather as useful constructs around which to have a meaningful conversation about a company's growth and innovation needs.
THE GR5 GROWTH STRATEGY ROADMAP ™
The foremost business challenge of the world we live in is how to grow your business in such a way that it becomes more responsive to rapidly shifting markets while also more resilient to long term external change. This is a philosophical shift away from the norm, which tends to focus on short term growth. Here, that is not enough, rather your business must grow in a responsive and resilient manner for the sake of the long term.
Recognizing this need, we created the GR5 Growth Strategy Roadmap (GR5 Roadmap), our proprietary model for responsive and resilient business growth. This model charts the course for the types of large–scale innovations that produce growth at a strategically significant scale while also fostering resilience for the future.
The GR5 Roadmap identifies six pathways for where to hunt for growth, and four vehicles to leverage in getting there, all of which have their roots in Strategic Innovation.
THE RESPONSIVE INNOVATION ENGINE
(CORPORATE INNOVATION) ARCHITECTURE ™
Corporate Innovation programs must – on a number of levels – deliver real outcomes. And in order to do this – in order to ensure a constant flow of fresh new ideas for real business opportunities – they require a particularly unique mix of "inputs". Indeed, Corporate Innovation programs are singularly unique in the leadership demands they must make, the cultures they must instill, the organizational structures they must create, the roles and responsibilities they must call upon, and the processes they must use.
To bring this to life, we created the Responsive Innovation Engine (Corporate Innovation) Architecture (Responsive IE) — our comprehensive model for Corporate Innovation.
Responsive IE defines eighteen elements for a successful Corporate Innovation program. Each of these is distinct and must be well–considered and well–designed in order to align to the business, its strategies, its markets, and its needs and opportunities.
THE MARKET STREAM INNOVATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM ™
Organizations with a mandate for innovation need a sustainable innovation pipeline. This requires a robust Innovation Management system capable of producing constant streams of new business ideas.
To address this, we created the Market Stream Innovation Management System (Market Stream IM), our proprietary system for Innovation Management. Market Stream IM provides the tools and processes needed to establish sustainable innovation pipeline capability. In turn, that produces a constant stream of new business ideas that lead to new opportunities around emerging market needs, renewing the connectedness between a business and its markets.
Market Stream IM is structured into six stages, the first being foundational, the next three being procedural, the last two being commercial. Using this system, our clients are able to establish the operational and governance procedures needed to drive a funnel and pipeline of new innovation opportunities. Because evolving an organization into an innovation–driven one takes time, and because learning to use IM effectively takes effort and a clear sense of direction, Market Stream IM provides the playbook needed to achieve sustainable success.
THE FLIGHT BOARD INNOVATION METHOD ™
Companies are in constant need of new innovation concepts that are relevant to their business and where it is in relation to its markets. But generating relevant concepts is not always easy. It requires a solid process for deconstructing needs and reconstructing solutions.
Recognizing this, we created the Flight Board Innovation Method (FB/IM), our proprietary method for generating innovative new ideas. FB/IM enables us to lead clients through an easy–to–understand and progressive methodology for generating relevant new business innovations. It is structured as a six–step process focused on context, discovery, examination, synthesis, incubation, and realization.
Like an airport's flight board, this methodology provides insights into departures and arrivals. In this case however, the departure we are seeking is a departure away from an existing means of delivering a result or an experience (or the absence of a means), while the arrival we are seeking is an arrival at new means of delivering a more valued result or experience. This relies upon using divergent and convergent thinking processes to arrive at these new places.
THE BREAKTHROUGH BUSINESS INNOVATION MODEL ™
The need that companies often have is to search for and develop innovative new business designs that will resonate with particular market opportunities. These in turn yield meaningful step changes in business performance. Pursuing new business design requires an intentional process for examining the many facets of a business in order to uncover those designs that can be leveraged to yield the desired outcomes.
For this purpose, we crafted the Breakthrough Business Innovation Model (Breakthrough BI), our framework for innovative business design. Breakthrough BI is defined through the domains–of–potential, which provide the framework needed to examine a business and uncover those designs (combinations) that can be leveraged to produce the desired results, particularly in terms of market engagement and growth.
Breakthrough BI is structured as a collection of twenty–one points–of–differentiation, with these points clustered into the sub–domains of Target Market, Brand Delivery, Offering Space, Value Creation, Value Capture, and Customer Acquisition. These sub–domains are further clustered into either of the two key sides of the business model — Value Proposition and Value Delivery.
THE EMERGENT NPD PROCESS ™
Organizations pursuing breakthroughs in new products and services need a new product development (NPD) process that is specifically designed and adapted to facilitate the ongoing pursuit of breakthrough innovation.
Recognizing this need, we crafted the Emergent NPD Process (E/NPD), our proprietary process for new product development, and the result of many years of development, testing, and refinement.
This structured, well–defined process is divided into eight distinct phases, in which each phase builds upon and integrates with the preceding phases. Phase 1 broadly explores the market environment, while Phase 2 more narrowly explores users' needs. Phase 3 establishes the key strategies to be used in aligning the business to the market. Phases 4, 5, & 6 encompass the mid zone work needed to arrive at a go–to–market milestone decision. Finally, Phases 7 & 8 encompass the executional back end work required to commercialize the offering.
We leverage E/NPD for developing new product and service innovations for our clients, as well as for our training in new product development.
THE EXPERIENTIAL WORKPLACE FRAMEWORK ™
We believe the time has come for organizations to abandon the past 100 years of "modern management" and recreate their businesses in ways that unleash human potential. This requires a new type of thinking, and a new type of framework that lays out the mandates businesses must confront if they are to succeed at creating the sort of experiential, human workplace that delivers on innovation.
To this end, we developed the Experiential Workplace Framework (XWP), our proprietary framework for workplace innovation. XWP contains powerful insights culled from years of study and observation around organizations and current trends. More importantly, XWP delivers on the challenge of unleashing human potential.
The framework addresses fifteen critical areas of the organization and lays out in clear detail how businesses can completely rethink how they operate to become open, engaging, human, and innovative enterprises. Over time, this creates new cultures that make businesses centers of creative and engaging work which in turn accelerates growth for the long haul.
THE DYNAMICS OF INNOVATION (INNOVATION SPACE) DESIGN GUIDE ™
The built environment into which innovators are immersed has a profound impact on their psychological tendency, and their practical ability, to collaborate and to innovate. Physical spaces become catalysts for new ways of seeing and thinking. They bring new perspectives and break open mental pathways to whole new possibilities for what might be.
In order to design such spaces — spaces that maximize the ability and tendency to innovate — the need is for a model of group interaction and collaboration that understands the mandate for producing creative work and innovation.
To this end, we created the Dynamics of Innovation Design Guide (Dynannova), our proprietary model of group interaction and collaboration, born out of the need for creative innovation. We use this model as a powerful tool for designing innovation spaces — spaces that maximize the tendency for individuals and groups to innovate. The resulting spaces — referred to as Dynannova Designs — have elements that are both focused and communal, as both are critical to innovation productivity. These spaces prove very helpful to an organization's innovation efforts.
DESIGN METHODS & THE LEGACY INNOVATION TOOLBOX
In addition to these primary Methods and Processes, we have several other more basic tools that we use in our work with clients and for our various workshops. Some of these are unique to Legacy Innovation Group, while others belong to the large open domain of tools known as Design Methods. We have mastered these tools through years of practice and know just the right tool to use for a particular need.
Two of our more well–used business innovation tools are the Legacy Innovation Solution Space Canvas and the Legacy Innovation Business Model Canvas. Both of these are our improvements over what is used elsewhere.
